Bangladesh National Zoo, Bengali: (বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় চিড়িয়াখানা) is a Zoo located in the Mirpur section of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The Zoo contains many native and non-native animals and wild life, and hosts about three million visitors each year. The name of Zoo has been changed 5th February 2015 from Dhaka Zoo to Bangladesh National Zoo. Established in 1974, the 186-acre (75 ha) Dhaka Zoo is the largest zoo in Bangladesh, and is operated by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The zoo attracts around 10,000 visitors every day with the number increasing during the weekends and holidays. The zoo is also known for its poor conditions for animals and the corruption of its officials. The yearly budget of Dhaka Zoo is Tk 37.5 million, out of which Tk 25 million is spent on feeding the animals.

Dhaka Zoo Facilities Master Plan:

The National Zoo is undergoing a comprehensive master planning process. As we described last year, the Facilities Master Plan will guide the Zoo’s facilities renewal, which will help the Zoo achieve its mission of providing leadership in animal care, science, education, and sustainability. This long process, which is far from over, considers a variety of alternatives and benefits from feedback from the public.
The current phase involves an Environmental Assessment, which will be followed by such steps as comparing business plans.
Activities
Government employee’s period is 8 hours a day. Anybody performing duty beyond that are entitled to get overtime allowances as per Govt. rules. For all practical purposes, the employees of Bangladesh National Zoo are to perform their duty from 7.00 am to sunset when the visitors leave the palace as per existing provision, the Zoo are kept open for the visitors on all weekly holidays and other national holidays including holy Eid , puja etc. So the employees of Dhaka Zoo are denied form attending any social function retrieval.

Animals:

The zoo is currently home to 2,150 animals from 134 species.
58 species of mammals(including elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, zebras, waterbucks, otters, hyenas, deer, giraffes, impala, black bears, tapirs, hippos, lions, many species of monkeys, chimpanzees, baboons, and Bengal tigers.)

1500 birds representing 91 species(including peacocks, rhea, African gray parrots, cassowary, owls, ostrich, emus, teals, finches, babblers, owls, vultures, and eagles. The two lakes at the zoo also host migratory water birds each winter)

13 species of reptiles(including snakes and crocodiles, and 28 species of fish)
